On January 26, 2012, it was observed in Acapulco Bay a red tide caused by the naked dinoflagellate Gyrodinium instriatum, whose abundance varied between 796 and 2120 × 103 cells L – 1. Other abundant dinoflagellates were Noctiluca scintillans and Gymnodinium catenatum. The values average temperature and salinity (in situ) were of 24.4 ° C and 33.13, respectively, during proliferation that was related to high concentrations of nutrients, particularly ammonia and nitrates.
