Abstract

The Kemp's ridley females (Lepidochelys kempi, Garman 1880) nest in massive events known
as arribazones. In this paper some characteristics of the arribazones are described. A group of 132 females tagged was followed throughout some nesting seasons to determine their preference to nest in arribazones; the most of them were observed at least 50% of times forming these groups. The nesting seasons (1978- 1998) were classified according to the percent of females that nested in these groups; five years were classified as "without" arribazones, because less than 50% of the turtles nested in these events; the beginning of these seasons was delayed and the abundance of nesting was lower than that of the preceding
year. Arribazones were more frequent in May and they were correlated with the population abundance (p<0.05), in contrast, they were weakly related with the length of nesting seasons. Arribazones occur approximately at the same time throughout the 100 km length of the nesting beach; this suggests that some environmental factor of synoptic scale contributes to regulate this behavior.
